Terms & Conditions

Effective September 14, 2026

These terms apply to notary services provided by Sign on the Line, a sole proprietorship operated by Steven Davis, a California Commissioned Notary Public. By scheduling an appointment or using my services, you agree to them. If you do not agree with them, please do not book an appointment.

Scheduling

A request sent through this website, by phone, by text, or by email is a request, not a confirmed appointment. Your appointment is confirmed when I confirm it with you directly and we have agreed on a time, a location, and a price.

Fees

California law sets the maximum fee a notary public may charge for each notarial act (Gov. Code 8211). I never charge more than the statutory maximum, and I charge a notarial fee only for acts actually performed. Current fees are listed on the Pricing page.

Travel, after-hours, rush, waiting, printing, and scanning fees are separate. They are charges for my time and travel, they are not notarial fees, and they are not governed by the statutory cap. They are quoted to you before your appointment and appear as separate line items.

Payment

Payment is due when the appointment is complete, unless we have agreed otherwise in advance. I accept cash, Zelle, Venmo, check, and Visa, Mastercard, and American Express. There is no surcharge or convenience fee for paying by card.

Identification

California law requires me to verify your identity from satisfactory evidence before performing a notarial act (Civil Code 1185). You must present acceptable government-issued photo identification. If you cannot, I cannot notarize your document, regardless of whether I know you personally. If you are unsure whether your ID will be accepted, contact me before booking.

When I must decline

There are situations in which the law requires me to decline, and others in which I will use my judgment and decline. These include:

Declining in these circumstances is not a judgment about you. It is what a notary is required to do, and it protects you as much as it protects me.

What you are responsible for

You are responsible for giving me accurate information, presenting acceptable identification, and bringing a document that is complete and unaltered. I am not responsible for errors or omissions in a document you provide, or for a document being rejected because of them.

Please do not present a document you know to be fraudulent, altered, or obtained unlawfully. If I suspect fraud, I will decline the notarization, and I may be required to report it.

I am not an attorney

A notary public is not an attorney and cannot give legal advice. I cannot tell you which document you need, explain what a document means, advise whether you should sign it, or help you fill it out. My role is to verify your identity and witness your signature. Using my services does not create an attorney-client relationship. If you have questions about the content of your documents, please consult an attorney.

I also cannot serve as a witness to your documents. If your document requires witnesses, please arrange for them to be present. If you need help securing a witness or witnesses, let me know and I can likely assist.

Acceptance of your document

I can confirm that a notarial act was performed correctly under California law. I cannot guarantee that a bank, court, agency, foreign government, or other receiving party will accept your document. Their requirements are theirs. If your document has particular requirements, please confirm them before your appointment.

Waiting time

I allow a 20-minute grace period from the scheduled start time. After that, a waiting fee applies at the rate shown on the Pricing page.

Cancellation, rescheduling, and no-shows

There is no charge to cancel or reschedule before I travel to you. Please let me know as early as you can.

If I have already traveled to the appointment location and the signing cannot go ahead, the travel fee remains due, together with any after-hours or rush and same-day fee that applied to the booking. Those fees pay for reserving and reaching your appointment slot, and that is done by the time I arrive. This applies whether the reason is a cancellation on arrival, no one being present, identification that cannot be accepted, an incomplete document, or any of the situations listed above under "When I must decline."

Notarial fees are charged only for acts actually performed. If nothing is notarized, you owe no notarial fee.

If I cannot get to you

Occasionally something outside my control prevents me from reaching an appointment, such as a natural disaster, a fire, a road closure, a power outage, or a public health emergency. I am not responsible for delays or for being unable to attend in those circumstances. I will contact you as soon as I can, we will reschedule, and you will not be charged.

Confidentiality

I treat what I see at a signing as confidential, subject to the record-keeping and public access requirements that California law places on every notary's journal. Those are described in the Privacy Policy.

Changes to these terms

These terms may be updated. The version posted here on the date of your appointment is the version that applies to it.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California. Any dispute will be handled in Los Angeles County, California.

Severability

If any part of these terms is found to be invalid or unenforceable, that part is removed and the rest remains in effect.
